Creating the Very Best Kitchen Appliance Installers in the Industry

Almost two years ago, Kaboodle launched its industry-first White Goods Installer Apprenticeship Programme to tackle a gap in the training market.

Apprentice Installer Ed Harrison joined the government-supported scheme in September 2023.

To mark National Apprenticeship Week 2025, Ed - who is doing the Kaboodle Gas Engineering Level 3 Apprenticeship - spoke to us about how the past 16-months as a Kaboodle Apprentice has been going, and what the future holds for him.

What inspired you to start an apprenticeship?

Ed: I wanted a career path to work towards that involved practical work, and as I had just finished level 2 plumbing, working towards a gas safety qualification seemed like the next step.

What’s been your favourite part of the apprenticeship so far?

Ed: Going to new places each day. I like that no two days are the same

Can you share a moment when you felt proud of something you achieved?

Ed: My first unassisted install of a gas hob was a proud moment for me.

How do you handle mistakes or setbacks while learning on the job?

Ed: With an open mindset, as mistakes are a chance to improve myself.

What skills have you developed during your apprenticeship that you’re most excited about?

Ed: My general knowledge of appliances has improved vastly, and I feel much more confident talking to customers than I did when I first started.

How has your mentor or manager supported your learning journey?

Ed: Simon Hughes has been a great help, always offered advice when needed and has always been great in helping us get our gas portfolio finished.

What advice would you give to someone starting an apprenticeship?

Ed: To stick with it and learn as much as possible while you have the opportunity.

What are your future career goals, and how is this apprenticeship helping you achieve them?

Ed: I would like to start my own company in the future. However, I would like to get years of experience first, so being a lead installer is the next step for me.

What are you looking forward to learning next?

Ed: I’m looking forward to more training on all appliances and being able to install them with confidence.
